Overhauling my setup
Was inspired by Elena Rossini to try out Yunohost. What started as a brief trial of loading it onto a small linode server turned into a whole weekend of reworking my digital workflow.
I’ve run a homelab server for about 4 years now and have a lot of useful tools on there. Due to ISP limitations and not really wanting to open up my firewall any more than necessary, I’ve not opened up my homelab for access outside my home network.
Now that I’ve got Yunohost up and running I’ve been able to move a few of my services there and can access them evverywhere.
I’ve also set up FreshRSS and Wallabag there so hopefully I’ll be able to drop some subscriptions and keep my online reading workflow sync’d between all my devices.
I’m currently using Writefreely as my blogging software. It’s nice and simple and has a feed that I can easily hook up to Micro.blog. It also federates similarly to how Micro.blog can.
I had considered using Wordpress but it seems like overkill for how I currently blog.
The Linode server is their smallest tier and is predicted to cost ~$5/month. So that’s a reasonable amount for the functionality provided and the wide range of services I can get setup there.
Yunohost has been great to work with. Easy to install and easy to mantain. The way it handles DNS and certs is great and all I had to do was set up a few records with my registrar to get everything in a good place.
So overall I’m really happy with how things have gone so far an I’m excited to keep exploring and experimenting.
